HO’OULU // To grow, sprout, propagate

For grounding, for gratitude, for growth.

...

0113. O kalina a ka wai i ho’oulu ai

A tendril strengthened by water and grew

0114. O ka huli ho’okawowo honua

A being, produced by earth and spread

     - Lili’uokalani, Q. verse fifteen. In The Kumulipo

For this design, I focused on two specific lines of the Kumulipo, lines 0113 and 0114 as translated by Queen Lili'uokalani. These lines portray the image of water supporting a withered vine and how it provides strength and growth to every living being that spreads across the earth.

As I was creating this design, these lines continued to play over and over in my head, with about 10 designs born from just these two lines alone, but the one that stood out the most was this design portrayed on these earrings here.

Lines 0112-0120 of the Kumulipo introduces Kāne (god of fresh water) and his purpose in this world. Chanting this chant is one of my favorite ways to ground myself in my body as well as within each space I enter. Each line would focus my mind on all the water that surrounds me within my body, that we can see in the clouds, the rivers, the plant life, the fresh water springs, the soil, and floating in the air.

Each time chanted it emanates solitude and gratitude for growth, endurance, strength, and the honor to contemplate all that is set into our path. It is grounding within our physical space as well as each space we step into, reminding us of all the flourishing life within ourselves as well as the spaces around us.

For grounding, for gratitude, for growth. May this piece ground you in your path and remind you of the strength that flows through you.
